Power Company For Kids

I want to bring up a program that is near and dear to my heart! It is called Power Company For Kids. I know that it is available to Pontiac residents. You can contact the Salvation Army in Pontiac to see if it is available in your area. Power Company is a Christian youth group. They teach manners, bible versus, applying teachings to life and they have fun activities plus treats. They supply buses for transportation and it gives parents a 3hr. break every Saturday.
I know they are an asset in our community. All three of my children have attended this program and benefited. My youngest child who is hyper learned to interact with other children there. They have always been helpful, kind and worked with him.

Michigan's New 3 Step Wage Law

Michigander's have a new wage law that went into effect 10/02/2006. Governor Granholm signed it into law March 28, 2006. As of today the new minimum hourly wage is $6.95, it will increase to $7.15 July 2007, and finally rest at $7.40 July 2008.

Tipped workers remain at $2.65 per hour, but their tips and hourly wage must add up to the new minimum hourly wage.

38% Full-time employees, 75% twenty years and older, 60% female, and 23% parents will benefit from this new minimum hourly wage increase. 44% of families with children will benefit from this increase also.

We feel that this will be well received by the working class of Michigan. We have not looked at it's ramifications on Michigan's small business base. How will this increase affect small business. We would like to hear from some small business owners in Michigan.

Michigan has a lot of issues on the ballot including the SBT issue. I'm sure Governor Granholm will win some votes for the increase in hourly pay.

Pontiac Bus Drivers And Monitors Feeling Pinch

Employees for First Student are feeling the pinch. Drivers and monitors who are off this summer are denied unemployment benefits. One of the questions at hand is are they off due to lack of work or because there is no contract for the upcoming school year. These employees won the battle about five years ago and were able to collect unemployment benefits. There are no answers for these employees. Unemployment keeps issuing questionnaires and denial decision letters. Now they are phoning these employees to ask questions. Unemployment does not even have uniformity in who collects benefits within this group. About 50% of these employees are receiving benefits while 50% are denied. Unemployment is now asking the 50% who received benefits to repay this money.

Pontiac Northern Gets New Football Coach

Kieth Stephens has spent the last 29 years coaching football in Oak Park. Stephens cited "philosophical differences" with the administration at Oak Park School as the reason for his leave. He was hired to coach Northern's team May of 2006. This years varsity football team is loaded with inexperienced players so Coach Stephens has his hands full. We wish the Huskies good luck.

Oakland Yard Athletics offers the best of both worlds to parents and children. Every night this summer the outdoor patio is transformed into Cafe Max. Kids can have dinner, play in the sand, shoot hoops, hit a tetherball or run on the soccer field. Parents can have dinner, hang at the Tiki bar, sit on the picnic benches, sit near the fire pit, or socialize with other parents. The area is fenced and secure so parents don't have to worry. Drive-Thru Church Services After Dream Cruise

Two local churces are pairing up to offer outdoor worship services. Cana Lutheran and First United Methodist are holding these services the morning after the cruise complete with food, entertainment and a drive through atmosphere straight out of the 50's. Rev. Jeff Nelson plans his service August 20, 2006 at 5:00 p.m. ministering on "Trading in your sports car for a minivan." Rev. Bud Miller will hold his service the same day at 10:00 a.m. and his message is "On the road again." Cana Lutheran Church is located at 2119 Catalpa in Berkley.
